Fools' Day
She should have stopped. She should have stopped when everything became blurry. She should have closed her eyes and should have walked away. But she didn't. She just stood there, eyes wide open, staring into eternity. Her feet were on the ground but everything else was getting lost in that abyss. She couldn't move as much as she might have tried. It felt like her feet were glued to the sidewalk and she wasn't supposed to move, like the whole universe didn't want her to move. In that moment, she knew that was the place where she was supposed to be. It was right. She was breaking all the rules and it felt right. It felt as if every risk she'd taken was worth it, as nothing else mattered. Just that second. Just that moment when she could stare into the abyss and the abyss would stare back. A single moment that changed everything. A single moment that changed her entire existence. She shouldn't have pushed her luck. But she did. She decided to play everything she had left. So she bet on pieces of her heart. And she lost. She had no regrets. To stare into that abyss gave her the best feeling she had in a while. But then... then she blinked. And everything was gone.
